Supervision

my approach to supervision

I see supervision as a shared responsibility, and a collaborative activity, supporting effective therapeutic care for clients and the professional development of a supervisee.

I offer space for supervisees to process their work; feel secure in sharing their successes, struggles, doubts, and professional aspirations; and seek to co-create a trusting relationship where a supervisee can openly discuss their cases, be supported to reflect on them, and to receive positive strokes, and constructive feedback, without fear of undue criticism or repercussions.

I respect and affirm my supervisees’ theoretical orientation, working style and present skills.

I appreciate feedback.

my model of supervision

my supervision has five main tasks. Together, we share the responsibility of your:

  • work with clients who may be challenging, or in distress, in a therapeutic process which can, at times, be confusing

  • skills, knowledge and understanding development

  • maintaining your well-being through keeping an eye on your self-care, and supporting you to express your feelings such as grief or frustration, ‘let off steam’, laugh and speak the unspeakable

  • exploring and resolving, or learning to live with, the inevitable tensions that arise between personal, professional and organisational values

  • safe and ethical practice

the focus

in a relational approach to supervision we will give attention to client, therapist and supervisor

  • the narrative of your work with your client and how you are responding to it

  • and what is happening between you and me in the here and now as a result of discussing your client

We will work to a unique supervision contract, negotiated together and addressing supervisee, client and agency (if applicable) needs.
